Gentle singing for Care Home residents

Our sessions are designed especially for older residents and focus on enjoyment, connection, and shared experience — not performance.

No singing experience is needed. Everyone is welcome.

What does a session look like?

Each session lasts one hour and costs from £80*, with all materials provided.

1. Gentle vocal warm-up (5 minutes)

We begin with simple, seated warm-ups to help residents feel comfortable and confident:

  • Easy breathing exercises

  • Gentle facial and mouth movements

  • Light vocal sounds to wake up the voice

  • Relaxed posture and focus

These are designed to be safe, calm, and suitable for all abilities.

2. Introducing the song

The song is introduced slowly and clearly:

  • A short chat about the song and its background

  • Why it’s meaningful (seasonal, cultural or nostalgic links)

  • Listening to a short example or melody line

  • Reassurance that there is no pressure to “sing well”

Residents are encouraged to join in at their own pace.

3. Learning the song together

We then learn the song as a group:

  • Short phrases taught line by line

  • Repetition to build confidence

  • Clear cues and encouragement

  • Opportunities for call-and-response singing

Residents can sing, hum, tap along, or simply listen and enjoy.

4. Singing it through

The session builds towards singing the song all the way through together:

  • A shared moment of achievement

  • Emphasis on enjoyment, not accuracy

  • Positive reinforcement and applause

Where appropriate, songs can be revisited across multiple sessions.

Keeping residents engaged

Sessions are designed to maximise engagement and enjoyment:

  • Warm, conversational facilitation style

  • Encouraging social interaction and shared laughter

  • Allowing residents to suggest songs or memories

  • Supporting residents with dementia through repetition and familiarity

  • Flexibility for fluctuating energy levels and attention

Residents are always free to participate in the way that feels right for them.

Seasonal and special-occasion songs

Songs are chosen to reflect the time of year and important occasions, helping residents connect music with memories and meaning.

Examples include:

  • Valentine’s Day – love songs and romantic classics

  • VE Day – wartime and post-war favourites

  • Spring & Summer – light, joyful seasonal songs

  • Easter – reflective and uplifting pieces

  • Christmas – traditional carols and festive favourites

Song choices are discussed with Activity Coordinators to suit your residents.
